Philomena Churchill as becomes a Canon of the Territory of the People from the parish church of St Peter’s, Monte Creek on September 27, 2026.
Phil has been a member of the parish for almost its entire 100 years. As a young girl she came to the parish with her family, then moved away for a short time, and she returned with her husband - raising her children within the parish, and continuing to this day in a very active leadership role as Warden.
Phil gave leadership as a member of the 50th anniversary celebration committee. She was the Chair of the 90th Anniversary Celebration and, along with her team, lead a wonderful two-day event. Today, Phil is an important member of the 100th Anniversary Committee. Phil gives outstanding leadership to the care of the parish buildings. In 2005 the congregation recognized Phil and her husband Verne with a presentation of a plaque that hangs in the church office that reads, “In grateful acknowledgment of the commitment and dedication to Building Extension and Renovation”.
More than anyone else in the parish, Phil is our historian. She carries the history of people, events and important activities of the parish over her many years of involvement.
For years, Phil has supported and encouraged events around the Territory. In the past she has served as a delegate to the Diocese of Cariboo Synod. She has attended Equip, Regional Council and many Territory wide events. She can be found attending almost all events at parish churches in the area. Especially St Paul’s teas, dinner and worship/social events, and over the years, St George’s fundraising events, dinners and worship services.
Currently, she cares for two cemetery’s – St Peter’s Monte Creek and Holmwood Cemetery. She gives leadership in worship, serves on the Altar Guild, the Building and Cemetery Committee. When needed, you can find her cutting grass, painting and helping with the maintenance of the parish building, cemetery and land.
As a current Warden, she is actively involved with the financial, insurance needs and fundraising – including giving generously of her time and talents. One remarkable aspect of Phil ministry is her outstanding pastoral care. If a new person joins us, we will find Phil sitting with them learning about them and offering a friendly welcome. She is a faithful and deeply spiritual person who puts the needs of the people and parish foremost in her life. Her love of the Lord, leads her to action and love of all of God’s people.
