Sunday May 28th marked the unveiling of the long-awaited monument honouring the Nicola Valley First Nations veterans. It sits on the land adjacent to the Scw’exmx Parish in Shulus. The unveiling ceremony was well attended and had many officials, members of the RCMP, members of the Military and the Rocky Mountain Rangers as well as the families of the veterans in attendance.

In a very special moment at exactly 11:11am a F18 jet flown by 419 Tactical Fighter Training Squadron “Moose Squadron” and Captain Daegan Banga flew overhead.

The original monument is a large boulder that has plaques remembering the specific wars but not the veterans who fought in those wars. The new monument has the names of the veterans and will help show and tell the stories for future generations. The back of the monument also has pictures of veterans. The monument is complete with an enteral fire and feather sculptures.

This project is the culmination of hours of volunteer work from the committee and the end result is lovely. The new monument is open and can be viewed by the public at any time.
